Claremont Graduate University is a research powerhouse and one of two graduate universities in the town of Claremont. But how did it get its start?
As you may recall from our earlier article on the founding of Pomona College, back in 1924 Pomona’s President, James Blaisdell, had a decision to make:
Standing at a crossroads between keeping enrollment small or growing Pomona into a more prominent university, Blaisdell pioneered a fresh and innovative approach to solve for both. Blaisdell took inspiration from the Oxford model, which comprised a collection of independent colleges that shared centralized resources (think Hogwarts and the four houses 🧙🧙♀) and formally established the Claremont Consortium in 1924
Enter Claremont Graduate University (though, at the time, it was known then as ‘Claremont University College’). CGU was founded in 1925, and from its inception, ‘transdisciplinarity’ was a core tenet of CGU’s pedagogy. What does ‘transdisciplinarity’ mean? It’s the belief that “at CGU, students continue the cultivation of their own disciplines, but are also expected to augment this with research that incorporates other disciplines as well¹.”
This holistic approach to teaching and learning is largely one of the reasons why the university now has over 10 different schools and unique programs like the Drucker School of Management, the School of Art & Humanities, the Center for Information Systems & Technology, and many others. Today, more than 2,000 masters and Ph.D. students and approximately 200 full and part-time faculty comprise CGU. As is the case with all the Claremont Colleges, enrollment is limited and classes are small. Another particularly defining feature of CGU is that the university enrolls ~25% of international students from all over the world (this is the largest percentage of all the Claremont Colleges).
